Do you need a degree to do SEO in Portugal?

No. This is the most common question I get, and the answer is simple: nobody hiring for an SEO role in Portugal cares about your degree. They care about whether you can do the work.

A degree in marketing, communications, or computer science helps. It gives you a foundation in how businesses think about growth and how data works. But a degree alone will not get you hired. What will get you hired is a site you ranked, an audit you performed, or a tool you built.

I run confidential SEO hires for companies in Lisbon. When I review candidates, I look at demonstrable work first, CV second. Side projects, internships, your own website, a client you helped rank. Any of these count if you can show the work.

What does an SEO specialist actually do?

The day-to-day work of an SEO specialist in Portugal falls into four buckets:

1. Technical SEO

  • Crawl the site with Screaming Frog, identify issues (broken links, redirect chains, missing canonicals, slow pages)
  • Analyze Core Web Vitals and work with engineering to fix them
  • Log file analysis to understand what Googlebot actually crawls
  • Indexation control (what should be indexed, what should not)

2. Content and keyword strategy

  • Keyword research mapped to revenue, not vanity traffic
  • Content briefs that target the right intent
  • Internal linking architecture at scale
  • Content refresh programs (updating old content to maintain rankings)

3. Data and reporting

  • Build dashboards in Looker Studio or equivalent
  • Report on organic traffic, conversions, and revenue from organic
  • Run experiments (title tag changes, meta description tests, schema additions)
  • Use SQL or Python to pull and analyze data faster than manual exports

4. Cross-functional collaboration

  • Write tickets for engineering and verify they get deployed
  • Work with content teams on editorial calendars
  • Present results to leadership in a way they can act on

You do not need a paid course to learn SEO. Here are the best free resources:

Building a portfolio when you have no experience

This is the part most people skip, and it is the part that gets you hired.

Step 1: Rank your own site Buy a domain, install WordPress or Astro, write 10 articles targeting low-competition keywords, and rank them. Document the process: what keyword you targeted, what you did, how long it took, and the before/after traffic.

Step 2: Do a free audit Find a local business in Lisbon with a bad website. Run a Screaming Frog crawl, check their GSC (if they will share access), and write a 2-page audit report. Send it to them for free. Now you have a real audit in your portfolio.

Step 3: Write a case study Pick a recent Google algorithm update. Analyze what happened, which sites won and lost, and write up what you would do about it. Publish it on LinkedIn or your own blog.

Step 4: Automate something If you know any Python, automate a repetitive SEO task. A GSC data puller, a rank tracker, a redirect checker. Put it on GitHub. This is the thing that will make you stand out from every other entry-level candidate.

Getting your first role

When you apply, do not send a generic CV. Send:

  1. Your LinkedIn or CV (one page)
  2. One line on the best organic-growth result you have personally driven, with the number
  3. A link to your portfolio (your site, your audit, your case study)

If you are early in your career or a recent graduate, there is an open role right now: SEO Specialist in Lisbon. EUR 24 to 35k, hybrid, at a high-growth scale-up. We care more about demonstrable work than years on a CV.

The compounding nature of SEO skills

SEO skills compound. What you learn in year 1 (how to audit a site, how to read GSC data, how to write a content brief) pays off in years 3 to 5 when you are running strategy for a company with millions of users.

The best time to start was a year ago. The second best time is now. Build something, show it, and apply.
