“Am I being underpaid?”

This is the most common question in SEO communities. The answer depends on two things: where you are, and what you actually do.

A “junior SEO” in Lisbon doing content optimization makes EUR 24,000. A “junior SEO” in San Francisco doing technical audits and log file analysis makes USD 65,000. Both are called “junior SEO.” They are not the same job.

This guide breaks down what you should actually expect in 2026, and what moves the number up.

Junior SEO salary ranges: global vs Portugal

Location Entry-level (0-2 yrs) Mid-level (2-5 yrs)
Portugal (Lisbon) EUR 24,000 to 35,000 EUR 35,000 to 55,000
UK (London) GBP 26,000 to 38,000 GBP 38,000 to 55,000
US (remote) USD 45,000 to 65,000 USD 65,000 to 95,000
US (SF/NYC) USD 55,000 to 75,000 USD 80,000 to 120,000
Germany (Berlin) EUR 35,000 to 48,000 EUR 48,000 to 70,000

If you are in Portugal and feeling underpaid, remember: the same role remote for a US company can pay 50 to 100% more. But you are competing against a global talent pool, so the bar is higher.

Factors that affect your salary

1. Technical depth (the biggest lever)

The gap between “content SEO” and “technical SEO” is the biggest salary divider in the industry.

Content SEO (keyword research, meta tags, content briefs, basic on-page) is the entry point. Most juniors start here. Salary: entry-level range.

Technical SEO (log file analysis, Core Web Vitals debugging, JavaScript rendering issues, indexation control, programmatic pages) pays 30 to 50% more at the same experience level. If you can read a server log and explain what Googlebot did, you are ahead of 80% of candidates.

2. Data skills

SQL or Python adds 20 to 30% to your salary. Not because the language itself is valuable, but because it means you can answer questions without waiting for someone else to pull the data. A junior who can write a SQL query to join GSC data with a rank tracker is worth more than a senior who exports CSVs and uses VLOOKUP.

3. Agency vs in-house

  • Agency: Lower base salary, broader experience across multiple clients and industries. Good for years 1 to 3.
  • In-house: Higher base salary, deeper experience with one product. Good for years 3+.
  • Freelance/consulting: Highest ceiling, most variable. Requires network and proven results.

4. Company stage

  • Startup (< 50 people): Lower salary, more equity, more ownership. You will do everything.
  • Scale-up (50 to 500 people): Good salary, real budgets, still fast-moving. The sweet spot for SEOs.
  • Enterprise (500+ people): Highest salary, slowest pace, most politics. Specialize or stagnate.

How to increase your value fast

Learn technical SEO

Start with Screaming Frog. Run a crawl on any site. Find 10 issues. Fix them. Repeat on 10 more sites. You now know more about technical SEO than most entry-level candidates.

Then learn Core Web Vitals. Use PageSpeed Insights. Understand what LCP, INP, and CLS actually measure. Work with a developer to fix them.

Then learn log file analysis. Download server logs. Parse them. Figure out what Googlebot actually crawls vs what it ignores. This is the skill that separates technical SEOs from content SEOs.

Learn data analysis

If you do not know SQL, learn it this month. The basics (SELECT, WHERE, JOIN, GROUP BY) are enough to make you dangerous. You can query the answer instead of asking for it.

Python is the next step. Start with pandas and the Google Search Console API. Automate a weekly report. You have just saved yourself 2 hours a week and made yourself more valuable.

Ship measurable results

“I improved organic traffic by 40% over 6 months by fixing 200 broken redirects and implementing a programmatic SEO strategy” is worth more than 5 years of experience with no results to show.

Document everything. Before and after. With numbers.

Move from generic to specialized

Generic SEOs are replaceable. Specialists are not. Pick a lane:

  • Technical SEO (log files, rendering, indexation)
  • International SEO (hreflang, multi-market strategy)
  • Programmatic SEO (template pages at scale)
  • SEO automation (Python, n8n, data pipelines)

When to ask for a raise (and how)

When: After a major win. You just fixed a site-wide indexation issue and organic traffic grew 30%. That is your moment. Not your annual review, not your birthday, not because you feel like it.

How: Bring data, not vibes.

“Over the last 6 months, I fixed 200 broken redirects, implemented schema across 500 pages, and built a content refresh pipeline. Organic traffic is up 35% and organic conversions are up 22%. Based on market rates for mid-level technical SEOs in Lisbon (EUR 40k to 55k), I would like to discuss adjusting my compensation to reflect the scope of my role.”

That is a conversation. “I think I deserve a raise” is not.

Current open roles

If you are early in your career and looking for a role that will give you real ownership, there is an open position: SEO Specialist in Lisbon. EUR 24 to 35k, hybrid, at a high-growth scale-up. We care more about demonstrable work than years on a CV.

Frequently asked questions

How can I increase my SEO salary fast?

Is SEO underpaid compared to other digital marketing roles?

Ask for a raise when you have a documented track record of measurable results: traffic growth, ranking improvements, revenue from organic. Bring data, not vibes. Time it after a major win, not on an arbitrary schedule.
